How To Hire

How to Hire a Trailer to Self Tow?

Hiring a trailer from Hitch is fast, simple, and secure. Here is everything needed for a smooth hire experience.

Who Can Hire?

Anyone over 21 with a valid, full UK driving licence can hire a trailer. The person booking must also collect the trailer in person and provide all required documents on collection.

What Is Needed to Hire a Trailer?

To complete your booking, please bring:
- A full UK driving licence (photo card)
- A recent utility bill or bank statement (proof of address, dated within the last 60 days)
- A valid certificate of motor insurance for the towing vehicle (sometimes requested)
- The DVLA vehicle registration document (V5) for your towing vehicle
- A legal number plate matching your towing vehicle (we can make number plates on site with your V5 and licence)
- Credit/debit card for payment and deposit.

Can Any Car Tow a Trailer?

Not all cars are rated to tow all trailers. Before booking:
- Check your car’s manual for towing weight limits (“maximum authorised mass” / MAM)
- Ensure your car is fitted with a tow bar and correct wiring for trailer lights
- On a full UK licence, most drivers can tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM; check your entry codes at the DVLA if uncertain.
- Trailers and loads must never exceed the towing capacity of your vehicle.

What Should Be Brought on the Day of Hire?

When collecting your trailer, bring:
- Driving licence (photo card)
- Proof of address (recent utility bill or bank statement)
- Your vehicle’s V5 registration document (if a number plate is needed)
- Your own legal number plate (or use our number plate service with ID)
- Matching card for payment and deposit.

We require the person hiring to be present in person and to sign the hire agreement and insurance terms.

What Can the Trailers Be Used For?

Our trailers are perfect for:
- House moves and clearances
- Transporting furniture, white goods, bikes, or machinery
- Garden and landscaping projects, garden waste, or DIY jobs
- Farming and equestrian needs (livestock, feed, equipment)
- Delivery runs, events, catering (with refrigerated trailers)

What Are Trailers NOT To Be Used For?

Trailers must NOT be used for:
- Carrying prohibited, hazardous, or toxic goods
- Unlawful activities or improper loads
- Transport exceeding trailer or tow vehicle’s rated capacity
- Journeys outside the UK without prior consent (extra conditions/insurance may apply)
- Sub-hiring or lending to others
